The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.
I know that it is responsibility to understand the concepts of my classes and relate it to my students in a way that makes it applicable to their lives. I understand that I will need to be creative in my planning and know the interests of my students to make the content something they would want to learn.
This is a lesson plan I created for Classroom Management in the spring of 2010. I created it for the first day of a Child Development class. This lesson plan shows that from the beginning, I am interested in my students’ lives and want to know what kind of backgrounds they come from. It shows my creativeness in designing lesson plans that connect my students with the content and allows me to gage what kind of learner and person they are by the way the present and draw out their stories. I will use the backgrounds and stories of my students to continue designing lesson plans that make the content something my students will be interested in and will want to learn. This will make the concepts of the class applicable to their lives and engage them in future lessons of the class.
