Student Development

The teacher understands how children learn and develop, and can provide learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social and personal development.

I know that students learn and develop at different speeds and I need to be willing to work with that. I understand that I need to be flexible in my teaching and be willing and able to change things if necessary. I also understand that I need to provide opportunities for my students to grow and form their own opinions.

This artifact is a lesson plan created for my Methods of Teaching class I took in the fall of 2010. I originally created the lesson plan for a microteaching discussion assignment, and after the discussion took place, decided I would want to incorporate it into my future curriculum. This lesson plan shows that I am providing opportunities for my students to form their own opinions and to express them with their peers by having student participate in a discussion that isn’t extremely controversial but is something most of my students will experience. It also shows that I am flexible with my teaching and will continue to teach a concept if students in the class do not understand the concept. This shows this by using guiding questions and extra activities included in the lesson plan that can be used for extra reinforcement of the concept. It also shows that I am conscious of students’ rates in which they learn by allowing wait time after questioning and listening to students comments to assess if the students are learning the concepts I want them to learn. I will use this assessment to decide whether to continue the discussion at that time, and whether to have more discussions in the future.
